90’s Feminist
Cartoon Characters
Creative director
Jeremy Scott has used the characters from The
Powerpuff Girls in some of his designs for Moschino (see the following
image).
The Powerpuff Girls was a show that ran on Cartoon
Network from 1998 and the three lead characters are now considered some of the
first truly feminist super-heroines. The use of The Powerpuff Girls could influence the use of other cartoon characters
that empower women within this work.
The following is
a list of influential women empowering characters from the 90’s
1.
Charlotte Pickles from Rugrats
Charlotte was the shows high-powered executive who also ensured that she raised her daughter to be
strong, independent, and outspoken.
2.
Daria Morgendorffer from Daria
When the creator of the show Glenn Eichler was asked if
Daria was a feminist, he stated, “I would say so, yeah. She thinks she’s
as good as anyone else and should be treated as well as anyone else. And she
doesn’t think she should be subservient to anyone.”
3.
Lisa Simpson from The
Simpsons
Lisa has
demonstrated repeatedly that she believes in brains over beauty, the importance of loving your family
regardless of how kooky they may be, and that sexism does indeed exist and needs
to be eradicated.
4.
Helga Pataki from Hey
Arnold!
Helga was a confident girl who had real goals for her career.
Despite dreaming of a future with Arnold, she always pictured herself in a
position of power, demanding equality and making sure the world knew that she
was a woman who demanded and deserved respect.
