FEMINISM HAS CONQUERED POP CULTURE…. KIND OF.
February 15, 2016
In today’s society so many women have the platform to unite other
women and young girls together and although so many are dropping the F bomb
(FEMINISM) like there is no tomorrow and devoting themselves to the movement,
the overwhelming issue still stands of young girls falling victim to prejudice,
social constraints and abuse. Young girls are taught to be strong and proud
individuals in Western society through the media and modern teachings. They
have the freedom in which to express themselves without limitations so why do
they continue to engage and fall victim to cyber bullying and character
bashing. The fear of standing against the bully and risking rejection,
seclusion and solitude traps them in becoming what they fear.
The contradiction in pop culture is why young adults are
getting so confused; for example, Kyle Jenner is an advocate for anti bullying
and campaigns against it on her social media channels yet she has had surgical
enhancements and completely changed her whole look at such a young age which
echoes the message ‘if you don’t like it change it’. This is a demotivating
message to young girls who don’t like the way they look. It all seems a bit
confusing and fake to me, she tells the world ‘everyone is beautiful’ but then
doesn’t practice what she preaches.
Beyonce has openly admitted she is a feminist but not the
media hyped version that we all associate with the word; she regards herself
more as a humanist, fighting for equality in all aspects. Her visual music
video’s throughout her album…. , connotes
power, unity, freedom and strength and speaks volumes to young girls who aspire
to be like her. She celebrates her
heritage, her ethnicity, her gender and her body and she rejoices in all that
she is and stands for and she uses her platform to evoke a positive message. However
many would argue that she too is a walking contradiction, she supports a
movement that along with other things, aims to break the stereotype that women
are not just merely sexual objects who should be valued for more than just
sexual appeal and taken seriously within the professional world, however
Beyonce capitalises on sex appeal. The music industry capitalises on sex
appeal… sex sells. So how can you stand up for gender equality and uniting
women when you are prancing around semi-naked.
Pop culture has a huge influence of young girls and how they
perceive themselves and their future aspirations. They would much rather pick
up a fashion and gossip magazine than the Guardian, like they would rather
watch a reality TV show and the music channels than a documentary on the stock
exchange or world poverty. These platforms are responsible for characterising
and shaping many girls views from a young age. Young girls are very susceptible
to media trends and they have channelled this ‘new craze’ of feminism but they
do not understand or represent the true meaning of the word, instead they
contradict its values and represent a different message therefore pop culture
must change it’s angle.
Ideas taken from this: Gap
in the market for a social platform that praises young girls and boosts their
confidence.
This gave us an insight into modern cultures in today's society and a better understanding of the online conversations going on between young girls and who they are choosing to engage with and aspire to be like. This gave us the idea to create a positive platform for young girls where they are able to explore confidence in a positive and compliment each other.
